Mental health support organization SpeakUpCIC held an event yesterday (May 10) at Olby’s in Margate, which was opened by Ramsgate Mayor Raushan Ara and attended by more than 70 people.

The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week (May 9-15) this year is ‘loneliness’ and the event focused on ways to eliminate loneliness and social isolation, which have a major impact on people’s mental health and well-being. In his keynote, Raushan highlighted the importance of people connecting with each other to help reduce loneliness and how social interaction benefits people’s mental health.

Due to Covid this was SpeakUpCIC’s first event in over two years and allowed people to meet and socialize with others, learn about the support available and take part in a range activities to promote mental well-being.

SpeakUpCIC CEO and Founder Maggie Gallant said, “We are thrilled with the number of people who have joined us in commemorating this important week. It was wonderful to see so many people coming together to enjoy the fun get-togethers and activities.

“Covid has been a very difficult and lonely time for all of us, so this event was very important to provide the opportunity to socialize and reconnect. SpeakUpCIC would like to express our gratitude to Raushan for opening the event and his support continues and to Olby for their support in allowing us to use their room, it is much appreciated.

Cllr Ara said: “Thank you to the organizers for inviting me.

“SpeakUpCIC is doing incredible work promoting recovery and giving voice to people who use mental health services in Thanet, Sandwich, Dover, Deal and Ashford.

“Members are encouraged to share their experiences in a confidential and safe environment and to contribute to improving the quality of services for people living with mental illness. »
