Weekend breakfast presenter Sara-Jayne King talks to Accidental Impacts support group member Anita Grossman.

  • Accidental Impacts is a US-based global support group for people who have accidentally killed or injured others.
  • Most band members have been involved in fatal car crashes
  • The support group helps people come to terms with the trauma of killing someone

The case of Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin, regardless of the outcome of the court, is tragic.

On October 21, 2021, Baldwin was filming the set of the upcoming American western Rust when he discharged a gun used as a prop, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza.

The trauma of accidentally killing or injuring someone could have lasting effects on a person’s mental well-being, leading to PTSD.

In the United States, a support group called Accidental Impacts helps people who find themselves in this unfortunate position.

Anita Grossman is a member of the group. In 1970 she was involved in a fatal car accident in which her friend was killed.

My parents dissuaded me from talking about it too much, especially since there were disputes… I just kept everything inside. I suffered from tremendous feelings of guilt, anxiety and depression.

In the past two years since I found Accidental Impacts…I started to address the feelings that were inside of me.

Grossman says the support group helped her forgive herself and come to terms with the tragic incident she had to endure.

She says talking to like-minded people who have been through the exact same or similar incident helps overcome guilt and depression.

We’re talking about turning pain into purpose and taking responsibility. Whether it’s my fault or not… I took a life, and it really upsets me, so I have to talk about it.

Just in the last couple of years I started talking about it and started the real healing process… It’s never going to go away, it happened.
